On the gorge “Kinsenkyo,” centered around the Shokotsu River in Takinoue Town, various waterfalls of different sizes freeze during the winter, creating beautiful icefalls. Put on your snowshoes and walk on the snow to admire the stunning icefalls and observe winter wildlife.

Frozen Waterfalls & Icicles

Adventure Details

You will walk on the snow-covered walking trail of Kinsenkyo Gorge wearing snowshoes. You will have the opportunity to closely observe the icefalls created by the frozen waterfalls of the Shokotsu River. The tour lasts approximately 2 hours and includes guided commentary on the icefalls and winter wildlife.

The tour starts from Hotel Keikoku.

Start times are flexible upon consultation, generally between early morning and around 14:00.

Clothing

  • Ski wear or other cold-weather clothing that covers your feet.
  • Winter boots, such as long boots, for warmth.
  • Gloves and a hat.
  • If you have your own, snowshoes (rentals are available).

What to Bring

  • A towel.
  • Sufficient drinking water.

Oshiranepu River is a tributary of the Shokotsu River. It is a river formed by the “Oshiranepu River Formation,” a layer of turbidite deposits created between 16 million and 13 million years ago due to underwater landslides on the seafloor. Would you like to walk along the river’s surface, shaped by these step-like geological layers?

Adventure Details

You will wear snowshoes and walk on the frozen surface of the Oshiranepu River, a tributary of the Shokotsu River. This tour offers the chance to get up close to the icefalls formed along the Oshiranepu River Formation. The adventure lasts approximately 2 hours and includes guided commentary on the icefalls and winter wildlife.

The tour starts near the Oshiranepu Bridge on the Oshiranepu River, about a 10‑minute drive from Hotel Keikoku.

Start times are flexible upon consultation, generally scheduled between early morning and around 14:00.

*For safety reasons, if temperatures rise above 0°C, the tour will be canceled. In that case, please enjoy the Kinsenkyo Snow Adventure instead.
