Try Your First Fly Fishing Experience on the Shokotsu River!

At Poussin, we offer beginner-friendly fly fishing experiences on the Shokotsu River system in Takinoue Town.

No prior experience in fly fishing or fishing? No problem!

You’ll start by making your own fly, receive detailed fishing instructions, and we’ll provide all the support you need to help you catch your first trout.

Workshop Details

For a morning fishing session (Times are approximate and can be adjusted)
7:45 – Meet in front of Hotel Keikoku for a pre-fishing briefing
8:00 – Move to the fly-tying venue for the Fly Tying Experience
   Participants can either follow in their own car or ride with the guide
   Create an Elk Hair Caddis, a classic dry fly
9:00 – Move outdoors for the Fly Casting Experience
   Receive a fly rod and reel, then practice casting
10:00 – Move to the Shokotsu River system for the Fishing Experience
   Head upstream to target Oshorokoma, a beginner-friendly native trout
   Start with a lesson at an easy casting spot
11:30 – Return to the Hotel Keikoku parking lot and conclude the session

Fly fishing is a fishing method primarily targeting trout and other salmonid species. Originating in England, it involves using artificial flies instead of bait to catch fish. Since flies are lightweight and need to be delivered precisely to the fish, a specialized weighted fishing line called a fly line is used. This line is cast in a whip-like motion to propel the fly to the desired location.

One of the biggest challenges for beginners is mastering this casting technique, known as fly casting, which often makes fly fishing seem difficult to start.

At Poussin, we offer a step-by-step experience to help beginners get started with fly fishing through three key activities:

Flies needed during the fishing trip will be provided free of charge.

If you would like to challenge rainbow trout fishing in the main stream after the workshop, please feel free to consult us.

Important Notes

  • We cannot take responsibility for any accidents, injuries, or damage to personal belongings that may occur during the fishing trip.
  • The fishing area is within a habitat of Hokkaido brown bears. While the guide will take every precaution, we highly recommend that participants bring bear deterrents such as bear bells or bear spray.
  • Children must be in elementary school or older and accompanied by a guardian. Life jackets are required for children, and the fishing trip will be adjusted to suit their needs.
  • Additional fishing supplies, such as leaders and other consumables beyond the flies used during the workshop, will be charged separately.
  • While we will do our best to provide a fulfilling experience, successful catches cannot be guaranteed, as we are working in a natural environment.
